Autumn is finally here – with it, tasteful decorations for this time of year. myHOMEBOOK author and interior designer Odett Schumann reveals how we can make our living spaces really cozy for the cold and wet season.
Welcome to fall! It’s probably one of the most obvious seasonal changes in the course of a year. After all, bright colors are swapped for muted tones, cool home textiles for cozy ones, and isolated light sources for a sea of lights. If you prepare for this change now, it will be easier to get used to the cold and wet season – that’s a promise. Let our decorative trends for fall 2024 inspire you.
1. Rustic details
Triggered by the Cowboy-Core trend in spring this year, the hype about living like it’s done in the Wild West is still going strong. The decorating trends for fall 2024 are also likely to be a little more rustic, with natural stone, old leather, and rough solid wood. Handmade ceramic or clay tableware, hand-blown glassware and robust natural textiles made from jute, linen or organic cotton add even more charm to the kitchen. These are given a lovely, homely character thanks to coarse embroidery patterns in bright colors.
In the living room and bedroom, on the other hand, cushions and blankets made of wool or felt, as well as (artificial) furs, can be draped. To complete the aesthetic, a small selection of cool chrome accents complements the soft fabrics and warming wood tones perfectly. This completes the rustic look! A mixture of antique silver and matte brass makes for an eclectic mix.
2. Variety of materials for lights
Beautiful lamps never go out of fashion, especially in the fall. From ceiling and wall lamps to table lamps, round, teardrop-shaped, or organically curved shapes are still in demand. When it comes to materials, there is now an enormously wide selection to choose from. In addition to classics such as glass and metal, lampshades made from woven rattan have been very popular for some time. Models made of fabric, paper, or wood are particularly innovative. While natural tones are always in style, vibrant colors are taking center stage this season. That is no problem; colorful lamps are currently in vogue, regardless of their design.
3. Time for wellness
With the decorative trends for fall 2024, a feel-good atmosphere is returning to our own four walls. After all, as the season gets cooler, we take more time for relaxation, care, and well-being. Of course, the best way to do this is to appeal to all the senses. That’s why it’s essential to have cuddly soft terry towels, aromatherapy candles, and diffusers this fall. This transforms the bathroom into a relaxing wellness oasis.
4. Organically shaped tableware
Unusual products also await us in the decorative trends for fall 2024, especially once you open the kitchen cupboard. In addition to classic round tableware, we will see more and more flowing shapes that seem to be inspired by nature in the coming season. Large plates with an elliptical curve or a random, organic shape offer plenty of space for eggs, salad, and bread in an original way. Moreover, there is no demand for perfection here – minor flaws or imperfections in models made of clay, ceramic, or earthenware are almost desirable. After all, a cup or jug like this looks more like a handmade one-off and adds a special touch to the table setting.
5. The calming colors of the country house look
Because themes such as mindfulness, relaxation, and well-being are more important than ever these days, the focus in interior design is increasingly on a correspondingly soothing ambiance. The country-house look is ideal for this, with its muted, natural tones that focus on slowing things down rather than the constant hustle and bustle. In any case, the time of bright colors, which have powerfully decorated our homes since spring and throughout the summer, is gradually coming to an end. The best source of inspiration for furnishing is a colorful bundle of autumn leaves. In addition to various shades of red, orange, and yellow, green, gray, and cream can now also be part of the interior design.

6. Fresh flowers and dried bouquets
Even if the time of fresh flowers in brightly colored tones is gradually ending, a piece of nature in the living room should not be missing as a decorative trend for autumn 2024. After all, we can expect at least as colorful representatives from the plant world in the coming season with asters, chrysanthemums, dahlias, gladioli, and tagetes.
Dried flowers in muted colors, on the other hand, provide lasting, charming autumn decorations. Pampas grass, beach lilacs, drumsticks, thistle, cotton branches, poppy bolls, and silver leaves are popular. Dried stalks of barley, oats, or wheat also create an appealing decoration. For added ambiance, consider incorporating nuts, cones, twigs, (scented) candles in autumn colors, or fairy lights.
