If silicone seals in the bathroom or kitchen are leaking, brittle, or unsightly, they should be removed. Otherwise, water can penetrate and cause damage and mold. So, if you want to reseal the shower base, window frame, or sink, you first need to remove the old silicone seal. There are various ways to do this.

First, remove silicone seals with a cutter or silicone scraper

Before attempting to remove the silicone grout with chemical solutions or household remedies, it is best to scrape it out with a sharp knife or a special grout scraper from the DIY store. The latter is also known as “grout sharks.” However, residue usually remains after mechanical removal.

Removing silicone seals with household remedies

Before resorting to a chemical silicone remover, you can first try to remove or at least soften the silicone with household remedies. The following options are available:

  • Dishwashing liquid: Smaller silicone residues can be removed with dishwashing liquid. To do this, apply the dishwashing liquid to the silicone and leave it to work for around a quarter of an hour. Important: Do not dilute the dishwashing liquid with water.
  • Vinegar essence: A vinegar mixture diluted with twice the amount of water can also be used to remove silicone grout. Here, too, you should allow at least ten minutes for it to take effect. Make absolutely sure that the vinegar does not attack the seals, for example, on windows.
  • Nail polish remover: The solvent contained in nail polish remover can also help to dissolve and remove silicone residue. Here, too, the product should be left to soak in for around ten minutes.
  • Oil: You can also try using baby oil or neutral cooking oil. However, the oil must get under the silicone layer in order to remove it. This means rubbing in thoroughly! Do not use it on wood, as this can cause stains.

Specialist retailers also sell special chemical agents for removing silicone if household remedies do not help. These silicone removers dissolve even the most stubborn residues from the silicone seals. Simply apply it to the relevant area according to the instructions on the packaging and leave it to work. Once the residue has dissolved, it can be easily scraped off. Then, clean the surface with water and dishwashing liquid.

Note: When using chemical silicone remover, it is advisable to wear protective gloves and safety goggles. You should also ventilate well during and after the work.
