Radishes are a wonderful starter vegetable that can be grown almost all year round. The crunchy vegetables are available in the supermarket all year round. There are usually lots of radishes in a bunch, so you can’t eat them all at once. myHOMEBOOK author Franka Kruse-Gering reveals how to keep them crunchy for longer.
Anyone who has ever harvested or bought radishes knows that their popular crunchiness all too quickly gives way to a shriveled appearance. But what can you do to keep radishes crunchy or make them crunchy again? With radishes, it’s all about storing them correctly.
Preparing Radishes Correctly
If you want to enjoy crunchy radishes for as long as possible, you should pay attention to one important point before storing them: The green must come off. In radishes, the greens grow above the soil. As a result, it draws moisture from the roots in the soil. The radish itself grows between the roots and the leaf. After a radish has been harvested, the leaves still draw their moisture, but now from the crunchy tubers themselves. They, therefore, become increasingly wrinkled as the leaves extract all the moisture from them. The leaves should, therefore, be cut off as soon as possible after harvesting or purchase.

Storing Radishes — Here’s How
After the leaves have been cut off, the radishes should be thoroughly rinsed and cleaned of dirt. As they lose moisture quite quickly, there are two ways to keep them fresh: Either place them in a small bowl of cold water and put them in the fridge or wrap them in a damp cloth — similar to asparagus. This will keep them fresh for over a week.
